From stigma to the social exclusion of disabled people

In her study of deafness on Martha’s Vineyard, Groce (1985) describes how the birth of a deaf child was seen as ‘a minor problem, rather than a major misfortune’ (p. 53). What is remarkable about this is that it strikes at the heart of the debate about disability and normality.
