ABSTRACT

Like other spheres of knowledge and belief the closures of science are driven by the search for closure. In our culture however they have a special place for they are held with great authority. If we are to look for an explanation for the authority of the closures of science it is probably in part to be found in the method by which they are adopted but more tellingly perhaps in their capacity to enable effective intervention. For the closures of science and technology have been spectacularly successful and have transformed our capacity to do things in the world, and as a consequence have seemingly extended our capacity to understand its workings.
