ABSTRACT
In this chapter we explore some of the underlying assumptions made about young children and the implications for research processes, as a result of social constructions of children and childhood in particular societies at particular times. Images of childhood and beliefs about young children are related in intimate ways to cultural, economic and historical factors. Similarly, changing theories of child development are reflected in expectations and even social policies about what is developmentally appropriate at particular periods of time.
