ABSTRACT

After 1945 American capitalism was the envy of the world. In five years the US had transformed itself into a war economy and had outproduced the Soviet Union, Germany, Japan and Britain combined – and not just in planes and tanks, for it increased production across a range of civilian industries too. Its productivity was legendary, its industrial riches apparently beyond peer; its technological lead seemed unassailable.
