ABSTRACT

In appraising the problems and prospects of different African countries, it is important to acknowledge that their geographical circumstances differ: first, in respect of their natural resource bases and climate, and second, in respect of their location. It is necessary in particular to consider the special case of the landlocked countries: out of twenty-nine landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) in the world, fifteen are in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
