ABSTRACT
Violence is often portrayed in sociological and anthropological literature as a breakdown of social order (Coser 1967; Siegel 1973; Taylor 1993), or a regulated means of social control (for example, Chagnon 1968), but, altogether, something serious, often deleterious, and an indication that something is ‘wrong’ in the society concerned.
