ABSTRACT

Denmark was one of the first places where social experiments were used as a process for introducing information and communication technology (ICT) to ordinary people. In the middle of the 1980s the first wave of experiments was introduced into rural areas in Denmark. Since then several other experiments have been carried out. Many things have changed since the 1980s. The goals have changed, the technology is different, target groups have shifted and new groups of actors are involved. In this chapter the development of social experiments with ICT in Europe, and especially in Denmark, will be described, and the chapter will try to identify what the outcomes of all these social experiments were and what the lessons might be for future developments.
