George Crook’s troops fight Apaches in Battle of the Caves near Tortilla Flat to northeast, 82 Apaches hiding in cave killed by Crook’s bullets deliberately ricocheted off cave ceiling; 1923 town founded by George Cleveland Curtis; Mormon Flat Dam completed to northeast on Salt River; 1927 Horse Mesa Dam completed on Salt River upstream (east) of Mormon Flat Dam; 1978 incorporated as a city.
