East central U.S. Capital: Frankfort. Major cities: Louisville, Lexington. In 1584, the Virginia charter included areas now part of Kentucky. It was ceded by

Virginia and entered the U.S. as the 15th state June 1, 1792. The Jackson Purchase of 1818 extended the state west from the Tennessee River to the Mississippi River. Kentucky remained in the Union during the Civil War although sentiments were deeply divided.
