Southern U.S. Capital: Baton Rouge. Major city: New Orleans. Louisiana was admitted to the U.S. as the Louisiana Purchase October 19, 1803, which

included all of the Mississippi Basin west of the river. The Florida Parishes, that part of Louisiana east of the Mississippi River once part of Spanish West Florida, were annexed in 1810. Louisiana was admitted to the Union as the 18th state April 30, 1812. It seceded as one of the Confederate states January 26, 1861, and was readmitted January 25, 1868.
