Eastern U.S. Capital: Annapolis. Major city: Baltimore. Maryland was one of the 13 colonies which adopted the U.S. Declaration of

Independence July 4, 1776. It became the 7th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution April 28, 1788. Maryland remained in the Union, although it was a slave state and its citizens had strong sentiments toward the Confederacy. The District of Columbia separated from Maryland and Virginia in 1801 and the city of Washington was established to become the national capital. The Virginia portion was returned in 1846.
