ABSTRACT
Southern U.S. Capital and largest city: Jackson. Mississippi Territory, including Alabama, was established April 7, 1798. The portion
of Mississippi extending to the Gulf known as West Florida was annexed by the U.S. in 1811. Alabama Territory separated from Mississippi August 15, 1817, and Mississippi entered the Union as the 20th state December 10 the same year. Mississippi seceded from the Union as a Confederate state January 9, 1861, and was readmitted Febmary 23, 1870.
