1866 Fort Bayard built to protect gold and silver mining activities; town founded; July 1877 9th Cavalry of Buffalo Soldiers under Corp. Clinton Greaves force their way out of encirclement by Chiricahuas; 1899 fort closed; Fort Bayard U.S. Veterans’ Hospital established, turned over to state 1966; 1938 incorporated as a city; July 1992 Buffalo Soldier Memorial dedicated to African-American cavalry.
