ABSTRACT
East central U.S. Capital: Nashville. Major cities: Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville. In 1784, the state of Franklin was declared in the northeastern corner of Tennessee, but
ended 1788 without being formally recognized. The area was ceded by North Carolina, becoming part of the Territory South of the Ohio May 26, 1790. Tennessee became the 16th U.S. state July 1, 1796. It seceded from the Union Febmary 1, 1861, as a Confederate state and was readmitted July 25, 1866.
