Southeastern U.S. Capital: Montgomery. Major cities: Birmingham, Mobile. Alabama became part of the U.S. as Mississippi Territory in 1798. The extension to the
Gulf known as West Florida was annexed by the U.S. in 1813. Alabama Territory was created March 3, 1817. Mississippi separated from the territory on December 10, 1817. Alabama became the 22nd state of the U.S. December 14, 1819. Alabama seceded from the U.S. as a Confederate state January 11, 1861. It was readmitted to the U.S. Febmary 23, 1868.
