ABSTRACT

Paul Mitchell Hess is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography and Program in Planning at the University of Toronto, where he teaches courses in urban design. His research focuses on suburban development patterns, development control and planning history, and transportation, especially pedestrian travel. Current projects include the planning history of the Toronto metropolitan area and the transformation of the suburban landscape with high-rise apartment blocks in the early post-World War II period. His work has been published in Transportation Research Record and the Journal of the American Planning Association.
