ABSTRACT

This piece was originally done for a gallery show with the theme of “steampunk”. Normally I try to avoid sci-fi/fantasy clichès or overly fantastical elements in my work in favor of a more serious and simplistic look. This is especially true when I am to put the work up on display. I want to make it look like it fits in a gallery and not in a game studio as a piece of concept art (although having it feel right in both is a bonus!). This made it difficult for me to conceptualize something relating to the theme, since I normally envision steam punk as being very fantastical and overly extravagant. It's not often that the initial idea I have for a piece ends up being crystallized in the final work, and this is no exception. I was initially playing around with a lighter, less mechanical look. I had intended to give her feathers and fabric, as if she were some kind of dancer or entertainer ( Fig.01 ).
