The wireless industry convention CTIA Wireless is always highly anticipated for potential insight into new wireless devices and technologies that will be unleashed during the ensuing year. However, CTIA Wireless 2009 at San Diego surprised all when the industry leaders sought an unprecedented 800 MHz of additional wireless spectrum. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski was forced to make a reference to a petition on the looming crisis of lack of “ licensed spectrum ” and to resolve to provide more “ oxygen ” to the industry. So is the world faced with the threat of a Malthusian nightmare of a growing population of wireless devices and insuffi cient spectrum? Perhaps not yet, but the issues need to be addressed with the highest priority.
