ABSTRACT

After Effects CS4 and CS5 come with a powerful third-party motion tracking system: mocha for After Effects. We’ll use mocha shape to create a simple matte to help color correct a moving region in a video clip – but the same techniques may be used for far more advanced applications, including tracking-assisted rotoscoping. After Effects CS5 also had comes with the mocha shape effect, which makes it easier to transfer complex mattes from mocha into After Effects. The steps include creating a mocha project, tracking an object, refining the track, and transferring the corner pin data to After Effects. As color correcting a region of footage is often less critical than sign replacement or other motion tracking assignments, we didn’t spend too much time perfecting the tracks, but we did have to make sure we tracked the center of the head rather than the entire flower.
