ABSTRACT

Most recording sessions will include several stages: preproduction, setup, basic or rhythm tracks, overdubs, rough mixes and mixing. Preproduction for the band or artist includes picking the songs for the session, working on the songs, evaluating and working out tempos, instrument repair and maintenance, rehearsing, recording rehearsals or live shows, discussion of overdubs and mixing. Before a recording session, people should ask the band or artist the following four questions: What is people budget; What is instrumentation; What is the purpose and length of recording; and what are people expectations. Ultimately, preproduction will make people recordings better and along the way save the band time and money. Basics or rhythm tracks involve recording the "bed" of a song. Mastering can help glue the songs together and make the overall tone more consistent.
