ABSTRACT

Computers have changed the process of sound recording rather dramatically. Where we once relied on an interconnected system of separate electronic devices, we can now accomplish the same tasks using computer software – once we have converted our audio signals into computer data. There are fundamental differences in how computers and analog audio systems behave that we must understand in order to take full advantage of the capabilities of digital audio systems. We can start by considering how computers represent numbers.
