ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the history of immigration as an evolving concept in the United States. Readers will learn about the laws and policies that govern America’s immigration system as well as the removal and detention process for undocumented immigrants. Agen-cies which carry out the nation’s immigration laws are also discussed as are exceptions to the broader deportation rule. Finally, sidebar sections discuss specific programs, such as Secure Communities, that highlight the growing intersection of local law enforcement and federal immigration policy. The chapter includes an interview with Kevin Fandl, a law pro-fessor and immigration and international trade expert.
