ABSTRACT

Manifestations of literacies honor the whole learner by being sensitive and responsive to what they accomplish during their literacy endeavors. Manifestations involve gaining insights into what learners know, their emotionality, the history of their learning, and the broader sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts in which they live and learn. This chapter explains manifestations within the contexts of two distinct discourses: the discourse of acquisition and the discourse of meaning making. The first treats literacy like a commodity and the second treats it as a complex, individual, social, and cultural project.
