ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the community and family contexts for China’s children in 2010 and 2014. We look at community level physical and social venues where children interact and socialize with others and the children’s family structure, home environment, parenting styles, caregivers’ attitudes on parental responsibilities, and parental engagement and interaction with children. While the four years from 2010 to 2014 saw apparent improvement in conditions of rural communities and family environment, significant urban-rural disparities still existed in multiple aspects of family context such as home environment, parenting behavior, and parental support for school work. Left-behind children with no parent at home were especially vulnerable.
