ABSTRACT

Nature-based tourism has been steadily increasing worldwide. This chapter explores sites that offered a range of nature tourism experiences that could provide an alternative to the one-size-fits-all approach. Two experiences – the Vermont Nature Trail and La Soufriere volcano – meet traditional ideas of nature tourism in the region and interest in rainforest hike experiences but offer tourists options based on accessibility, duration, and difficulty. Trinidadian culture reflects the influence of Amerindian, African, European, and Chinese cultures as well as South Asian. This can be seen in musical styles, such as calypso, and in cuisines. Popular Caribbean destinations such as Jamaica and the Dominican Republic provide examples of this type of tourism. The island of Trinidad is unique in the Caribbean. Once part of the South American continent, it has higher levels of biodiversity than found elsewhere in the region.
