ABSTRACT

Design practices are becoming ever more vital to our precarious world. The design of narrative environments responds to this shift through innovations in design education and design practice. It reimagines the figure of the designer and the processes of designing by adopting an open, systemic, multidisciplinary approach that promotes collaboration, participation and negotiation among disciplines, institutions and publics. The design of narrative environments is an explicit, reflexive focus on the ways in which narrative practices and spatial practices are interwoven to constitute an environmental understanding of the human. The tripartite network model has value in the design process, in the formulation of strategy, in the research process and as an organisational guide for collaboration. The premise for the design of narrative environments is that we are all subject to the stories and the places in which we find ourselves. Our agency as individuals, groups or societies emerges from those specific conditions.
