ABSTRACT

How good are people at disguising themselves when writing or speaking? What factors go into uncovering an unknown author or speaker? This chapter addresses these questions and others through a discussion of forensic linguistics. In this chapter, we draw upon a number of real cases that we have been involved with as expert forensic linguists in order to highlight the linguistic dimensions of crime analysis. These cases include instance of voice and accent disguise, voice and accent identification, authorship attribution and deception in written texts. Crucially, this case-based chapter includes discussion of both the strengths and challenges of employing forensic linguistics analysis.
