ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how we use the follow-up sessions to maintain and develop progress. Weekly ‘therapy by myself’ sessions are encouraged, to ensure that the patient identifies any prelapses or lapses. We stress the importance of using the first follow-up to identify and trouble-shoot any problems that arise, so that positive self-management can be reinforced in the second follow-up session. Clinical examples are used to illustrate these techniques. If any onward referral is needed for other problems, we consider it at this stage. Reviewing the case in supervision is an important learning opportunity, regardless of outcome.
