ABSTRACT

This chapter details Phase 3 of CBT-T, where emotional and cognitive triggers of behaviours are addressed. This phase is only used where there are eating behaviours that are not accounted for by starvation and poor dietary structure, but is particularly important when working with binge-eating disorder, purging disorder, and emotionally driven eating. The Newton’s cradle model is used to explain the mechanism whereby environmental triggers (e.g., being criticised) can evoke core beliefs and emotions that go on to trigger the use of problem eating behaviours (e.g. restriction, exercise, bingeing, purging). The techniques used include exposure-based methods, cognitive-behavioural methods to address core beliefs, and focused imagery rescripting. Clinical examples of each method are given.
