ABSTRACT
This story is based closely on Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Sara Thurston, a Methodist minister, awakes one Sunday morning to the realization that her faith is gone. Her crisis of faith makes her swing between contempt (the sin of the Right) and pity (the sin of the Left) until she is reconciled to the world in Nietzsche’s moment: eternal recurrence. The second half of the chapter explains that eternal recurrence involves a radical acceptance (and hence appreciation) for everything that appears in time. Nietzsche’s resulting moment rejects the love of inequality expressed in both pity and contempt but at the expense of embracing fatalism.
