ABSTRACT

Householders need to reduce their demand, agriculture needs to reduce methane emissions, industries need to find decarbonised manufacturing methods, designers are needed to produce pollutant-free vehicles and the electricity system needs to transform into one almost entirely free of fossil fuels. An electricity mix means having a diverse mix of methods for generating power in order to reduce exposure to weaknesses on one particular technology. Wind turbines, hydro and solar are variable resources of electricity generation, and their effectiveness will always be affected to the weather conditions. Decreasing the use of coal and gas can only be achieved through reduction in electricity demand or increasing the use of alternative low-carbon or renewable electricity generation. In addition to hydroelectric generators, a key technology in the route to decarbonised electricity is the development of pumped storage hydroelectric facilities. Bioenergy is presently used in Britain to reduce the use of fossil fuels in electricity generation.
