ABSTRACT
Avenging sexual assaults drives one of the most popular porn genres: revenge. Pop culture’s revenge trope depicts violent, disruptive, and criminal actions, including murders, rapes, and other violent crimes, followed by a failure of law enforcement to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice, leading to individual(s) enacting personal vengeance. Starting in the 1960s and 1970s, violent “rape-revenge films” formed a significant subgenre within what has been called the “cinema of revenge”. More recently, estranged lovers began posting embarrassing, humiliating videos and/or photos on outlawed websites, leading to efforts to make the practice of revealing intimate photos and videos without consent unlawful.
