ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the fifth R – Reawakening – of Sarvodaya’s 5Rs, Relief, Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Reconciliation and Reawakening, in relation to the Economic sphere of Sarvodaya’s Three-Sphere Model – Economics, Consciousness and Power. The chapter examines four significant limitations that the three villages Damniyamgama, Addapalam and Vaddavan faced, which stalled Reawakening in relation to the Economic Sphere, namely the lack of a sustainable income, maintenance costs, isolation and lack of transportation. The chapter also highlights the absence of collaborative and participatory governance platforms that ideally should exist at micro, meso and macro levels as a main reason behind the failure of the Economic Sphere in the three reconstruction villages.
