ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides an analysis of proposals for other paradigms which could be utilised for the protection of cultural heritage during armed conflict recently offered in academia and by international bodies: cultural cleansing, the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, and cultural genocide. It focuses on developments in the United Nations (UN) and other international bodies which have advanced the discourse and practice on the protection of cultural heritage during armed conflict within a security paradigm. The book analyzes UN Security Council Resolutions which focused on attacks on cultural heritage and discussed UN and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization initiatives in the field of cultural heritage, particularly the development of cultural peacekeeping, which firmly places the protection of cultural heritage within a security paradigm.
