The Medium Stuff – Where to Put Things?

The Design and Laying Out of Urban Areas
ByTony Hall

Chapter 6 points out that, although planning may have had limited success in providing sufficient houses, jobs and infrastructure on the large scale, it has, nevertheless, an important role in deciding the location of buildings and transport facilities. In doing this, it can pursue important goals for the community, in particular urban regeneration and management of gentrification. Planning has to deal also with the challenges posed by the change in the nature of shopping from one decade to another. The use of traffic calming and shared surfaces can be important for the creation of quality environment. All these matters can be brought together by contemporary urban design philosophy and practice which seek to create quality urban spaces. This is not just a matter of aesthetics, but practical human needs such as sociability, feeling safe and secure and being able to find your way easily.
