ABSTRACT

The need to review the impact of international health programs and technologies on women has been voiced increasingly in the field of international health. This chapter discusses issues related both to technologies for women’s health and to health technologies implemented by women. The international health community can learn a great deal from the triunphs and failures of international development with respect to Third World women. The chapter addresses these issues as they relate to poor women in both rural and urban contexts for two main reasons: because of their greater need; and because major public sector programs are aimed at the poor. A discussion of the impact of health technologies on women requires an examination of technologies which, though targeted at other household members, are mediated by women. Wiley Henry Mosley provides evidence of how health technologies produce varied impacts on households differentiated by socioeconomic status and other social characteristics.
