ABSTRACT

The one trait that is most often associated with leaders is credibility. All the literature about management effectiveness points right at credibility. A series of lies will allow thoughts of the leader to wander into “unfit” territory. It may be appropriate from time to time to tell a fib for the good of the organization but credibility needs to be restored. A leader who is proud of a record of accomplishments can build on that record and the inherent credibility to do more, to take more action. When bad things happen and time after time, the leader makes empty promises, the leader will finally be seen as having no clothes. Leaders can become celebrities and use that celebrity to be more effective. Celebrities can become leaders, but unless something in their background prepared them to be leaders, it will be a struggle.
