ABSTRACT

In the aftermath of a disaster, relief organizations are often tasked with hiring large quantities of employees without adequate time for training. Many foreigners inadvertently cause misunderstandings by focusing solely on the overt culture, which presents barriers to effective cross-cultural communication to those unwilling or untrained to recognize it. Using the context of post-earthquake Haiti, this case study places participants in the position of a training manager who is in charge of quickly preparing a new emergency response and recovery workers who enter the field and must navigate the chaos that has arisen from cultural misunderstandings.
