South Asian settlers at Batavia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries

Michael Pearson’s work on the Indian Ocean World opened up many ways of studying this world. Because his focus was more on the Portuguese networks and later on the African and Indian coasts, he never studied the Dutch trading company and the Dutch establishments in detail. However, deriving from his work and moving on from there, this work attempts to study the links between the Dutch and the South Asian settlers, focusing on the settlement at Batavia.
