ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the views of David Benyon, the newly appointed headteacher of Milltown High School, on multicultural and anti-racist education, and describes how they influenced his practice. Moreover, generally specific questions were asked about a candidate's views on school or departmental policy on multicultural or anti-racist education. David Benyon's commitment to multicultural and anti-racist education was shown in his practice in several ways. First, he attempted to ensure that the teachers he appointed were not racist and supported the school's policy. Second, he tried to make sure that the appointment procedures at Milltown High were free from racial or cultural bias so that ethnic minority applicants would receive equal opportunities and appointment on merit. He also argued that, all other things being equal, being from an ethnic minority would be a positive attribute for a person seeking appointment to the school.
