ABSTRACT

The development of more highly sophisticated forms of technology and the introduction of automation mean that the worker’s task today is no longer simply one of repetitive machine operation. The appraisal system could go some way towards providing the opportunity for such an exchange to take place. All this implies of course that the organisation is not a static entity which cannot be influenced but mobile, changing, responsive to both internal and external pressures. While appraisal systems at the moment are mainly concerned with management performance, higher levels of expectation seem likely to be held by employees at many levels in the organisation of the future. This may well demand the extension of appraisal procedures to employees other than those traditionally styled managerial. This is because more work is becoming managerial in its nature as against merely repetitive operational, making new demands upon decision making and responsible action.
