ABSTRACT

The most extensive survey of the coverage and usage of job evaluation in the UK was that recently carried out by the National Board for Prices and Incomes, which sampled 8,000 organisations in mining, manufacturing, construction, transport, certain service industries and public utilities. The advantages of job evaluation may extend beyond the frontiers of an individual firm. In some cases, job evaluation may, with benefit, be extended to a whole industry. In Germany an interesting situation is to be found in the engineering industry. Collective bargaining in Western Germany is generally conducted on a regional basis, and statutory works councils are responsible for overseeing the implementation of agreements at plant level. The Dutch attempt at national job evaluation was at the same time an attempt both to contain wage inflation and to establish equitable differential levels of payment.
