ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the actual career behaviour of the group of teachers who comprise the survey population. When identifying and analysing teacher career patterns and profiles it was the school or section of the Education Department the teacher was working in at the time the study was conducted, and the promotion position they occupied at that time, that was used for the purposes of analysis. This was despite the fact that some teachers had moved between school types during their career: for example, from primary to district schools, or from high schools to matriculation colleges. The chapter explores how long it took particular groups of teachers to achieve various positions in the promotions hierarchy, and in identifying the career contingency factors which appeared to influence the extent and rate of their progress. It presents the career profiles of teachers in non-teaching advisory, supervisory and administrative positions.
