ABSTRACT

One of the major derelictions of duty by educationists in recent history is their neglect of and contempt for values. Values matter of course in the life of every man and woman. But they matter absolutely crucially in education, and in the life and development of young people. Where adults responsible for the care and training of young people forget this fact, or deny it, we can be sure that mischief is afoot for society as a whole. The purpose of the Youth Service must at least include the induction of young people in a culture, a language of discourse, an inheritance of procedures, rituals and skills: the inculcation of past practices. All educators/ youth workers know that some basic rules are of crucial importance, not only for routine and stability in relationships, but also in the sphere of social education.
