ABSTRACT

Young people who reject schooling do so because it is boring, holds out few prospects for the future, and is without any intrinsic interest as well. The development or comprehensive schooling, has given a boost to the private schools. The Procrustean grip over comprehensive schools is revealed in the demand that all pupils are to be treated equally, despite manifest differences in ability, aptitude and interest among pupils. In The Future of Socialism Crosland had written that 'there can be no question of suddenly closing down the grammar schools and converting the secondary moderns into comprehensive schools. On The Future of Socialism, Susan Crosland was to comment as her husband's biographer: 'The book appeared at a time when there was an ideological vacuum within the Labour Party which had just suffered a second consecutive defeat at the polls'. As Secretary of State for Education Crosland was given the opportunity to put his theories into practice.
