ABSTRACT

Assisting the Secretary are Ministers of State who are responsible for such areas as school and other educational buildings, the supply of teachers and their training, further education, universities, educational broadcasting, the arts, civil science and sport. The relationships of a school depend very much, initially, on the nature of the school itself. The 1944 Education Act sought to establish a clear nomenclature and classification of the various types of school existing in the country. Primary and secondary schools maintained by Local Education Authorities (L.E.A.s). Voluntary schools are, in turn, divided into three categories: controlled, aided and special agreement schools. The L.E.A.s were responsible for appointing one-third of the managers/ governors of the aided schools, whilst the remaining two-thirds were foundation appointments. Primary and secondary schools maintained by L.E.A.s, but not established by them, are termed voluntary schools. Voluntary schools are, in turn, divided into three categories: controlled, aided and special agreement schools.
