ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a conceptual framework wherein the interaction between technology and business organisation can be accommodated. It reviews the practical means for sharing technology which have been adopted by aircraft firms. The essence of the structural contingency model is that technology bridges the environment and the industrial organisation. Technology transfer is a mechanism used by some industrial organisations in order to overcome the problems associated with innovating new aircraft or production technology. It involves the transfer of technology developed by one enterprise to another enterprise in return for a fee, royalty, or other kind of remuneration. Technological change is the quintessence of evolution for the aircraft industry and at its heart is the commitment to R & D, Under the rubric of the structural contingency framework, the rationale for viewing technological change as the cornerstone of a particular firm soon becomes apparent.
