ABSTRACT

The Cam Clay model and modified Cam Clay model were presented first by the researchers at Cambridge University to describe the behaviors of soft soils. The modified Cam Clay model was developed from the Cam Clay model; it has been widely used in geotechnical engineering since predication of soil deformation is crucial in many geotechnical engineering problems. Thus, the following introduction is limited to the modified Cam Clay model. The modified Cam Clay model can predict unlimited soil deformations with a constant stress or volume when a critical state is reached. Another advantage of the modified Cam Clay model is that the yield surface is very smooth, which makes the solution converged easily. As a result, the modified Cam Clay has wide applications for geotechnical engineering. The Cam Clay model in ANSYS consists of the elastic component and plastic component, which are individually introduced.
