ABSTRACT

Geologic and aggregate materials are inhomogeneous and contain weak planes in the materials, such as stratification planes. This kind of plane is named a jointed rock, which is anisotropic and non-linear, and has lower stiffness, higher permeability, and less strength than the intact rock. Various methods have been proposed to take the influence of discontinuities into account on the mechanical behavior of jointed rock. The definition of the Jointed Rock model in ANSYS requires a clarification of both the base material and the joints. Tunnel construction requires excavation of the soil. Understanding the stress state of the soil during tunnel excavation is very important for the project design. The finite element method was applied to study the tunnel excavation using the Jointed Rock material model. A 2D plane strain finite element model was developed to simulate the tunnel excavation using the Jointed Rock material model.
