ABSTRACT

This chapter considers a vascular surgery point-of-care ultrasound assessment of the lower limb venous system. Appreciate the relevant lower limb venous anatomy and common abbreviations for veins used in vascular surgery and interventional radiology settings. The common femoral vein (CFV) is supplied by the femoral vein and the deep femoral veins which are the main deep veins of the thigh. The two main superficial veins in the leg to consider are the great saphenous vein (GSV) and the small saphenous vein. The GSV runs up the medial part of the leg towards the groin where it joins the CFV at the sapheno-femoral junction. The two most common clinical indications for assessing the lower limbs in a venous context are: Varicose veins/venous leg ulceration and Deep vein thrombosis. The venous gangrene itself ultimately results from small vein and microvascular thrombosis.
